This is a running-count gig for me and there will be no actual “counter” on this site. It’s a mental log and I know what it is about. For you, I’ll make it multiple choice. The Idiot Log is which of the following?
- The number of actual, clinical idiots I encounter in a day.
- The number of people I encounter in a day who have not been clinically diagnosed with idiocy, but should be.
- The number of times other people call me an idiot (that I can hear).
- The number of times I refer to other people as idiots (that they can’t hear).
- The number of times a day (including references to myself and anything uttered in my car) that I say the word idiot.
- The number of idiots that could fit in a log.
- A pathetic holiday dessert.
The point of the Idiot Log is to illuminate, via an accountability mechanism such as a log, the incidence of an undesirable occurrence such as the utterance (or mutterance) of the word idiot, and thereby to reduce said occurrences. Clearly, I operate on the honor system here and there is a real danger that I will under-report. I will disclose to you now that even an under-reporting of my use of this term will seem, well… unseemly. I am Type A. Other people move too slowly for me. This is what I am talking about. Fortunately, since this is a mental log, kept only in my own head, you will never know. Unless I call you an idiot…
So why put the Idiot Log on my blog? First, so you’ll know that I’m counting. And second:
“But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, ‘Raca, ‘ is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.” Matthew 5:22
My feet are hot.
